About The Christian Community

The Christian Community was founded in response to questions concerning enlivening and renewing Christian practice and understanding as it had evolved up to the years shortly after the 1st World War. Several theological students, theologians, and ministers approached Rudolf Steiner, the Austrian philosopher and spiritual scientist, with their questions. His far reaching response gave the impetus that led to the birth of The Christian Community (Die Christengemeinschaft) in 1922 in Switzerland. Dr Friedrich Rittelmeyer, until then a prominent Lutheran minister, became the movement's first priest and leader.

It is now well over 80 years since the movement's relatively humble beginnings. Through those years many women and men have been trained in the seminaries and been ordained as priests. Their work has led to the founding of communities throughout the world - including Australia (1988) and New Zealand (1989), and more recently Japan and Italy.

The strength of The Christian Community is in the celebration of the renewed sacraments and in the striving of its priests to fulfill their work so that religious life in the 21st Century can become a source of inspiration and understanding for individuals who are seeking for something more - for something that goes beyond the norm and leads into the future.

In Australia and New Zealand there are eight locations where regular services and events are held at least once a month - and six of these with more than one service each week . Four priests are currently resident in New Zealand and five are resident in Australia.

Services and events within The Christian Community are open to all who wish to experience them. The Community is without dogma. Priests speak out of their own freedom and responsibility, and encourage participants to question and to find their own truth. Why not come along and see for yourself?
